ISBN 9780193966949.

The Tao of Psychology: Synchronicity and the Self, by Jean Shinoda Bolen
Written for the general reader. I learned little new stuff from the book. Has some interesting thought, but I think the author over-stretched, even abused Jung's idea of "synchronicity", making it a daily event and something like hot chocolate (but this could be a typical character of pop spiritual growth book).

Here is a summary of 2nd chapter "On the Nature of the Psyche".
3 levels of psyche
------------------------------ ---------------------------
archetype, whose nature is spirit. also psychoid
------------------------------ --------------------------
conscious: the interaction/conflict of will with instinct
unconscious:
two categories:
1. was conscious or would become conscious later, but now unconscious because forgotten or repressed
two categories:
1. was conscious or would become conscious later, but now unconscious because forgotten or repressed
2. something that has never been comprehensible by
conscious, therefore would never become conscious. i.e. archtetypes
themselves
include:
-- personal unconscious
-- collected unconcious (from instinct and archetype respectively)
-- have characteristics of instinct (e.g. autonomy, compulsion), and conscious (e.g. choice), and spirit -------------------------------------------------------------------
instinct: psychoid.
-> physiology of the organism

-> merged with chemical and physical conditions
-> matters

P105, top:
"Psychologically, however, the archetype as an image of instinct is a spiritual goal toward which the whole nature of man strives"
"Psychologically, however, the archetype as an image of instinct is a spiritual goal toward which the whole nature of man strives"
P105 bottom:
"The archetypal representations (images and ideas) mediated to us
by the unconscious should not be confused with the archetype as such.
They are very varied structures which all point back to one essentially
"representable" basic form. The latter is characterized by certain
formal elements and by certain fundamental meanings, although these can
be grasped only approximately".

The Self in Psychotic Process, by John Weir Perry
It has two parts. The first part has a detailed presentation of a case of catatonic schizophrenia. The second part is surveys of several symbols. I did learn something from reading the first part. The book is very dense, and the second part is too dense and dry for me to follow. So I gave up at page 89. Probably I should go back to the book after I gain more background knowledge.

The Far Side of Madness, by John Weir Perry
The view that schizophrenia is the process that psyche destroys the current problematic situation, rebirth in a reorganized way, and makes the self whole again. Also the author proposed the Kinship archetype which is claimed to be the predecessor of hero archetype.
Learned much from the book. Definitely a useful reading.
However, many things are repeated enormous time. Some parts (especially the one of mystics) is hard to see its points. Perhaps I lack sufficient background knowledge to understand it, or the material itself is in a preliminary stage even in the author's mind?
Do not understand why "love" is the ultimate solution. To my ultimately both love and hate are not important. Probably in early stage, love, which is irrational, helps the communications between ego and unconscious.
Published by Spring. 2nd edition. ISBN 9780882145570.

Man and his Symbols, edited by C.G. Jung
The book is conceived and edited by Jung. As his only book for laymen, it is considered the standard introduction book to Jungian ideas.
Chapter 1 "Approaching the unconscious" is the only chapter written by Jung, but it is pretty elementary.
Chapter 2 "Ancient myths and modern man" is the most substantial chapter, and I read it twice. Yes, it is more like written from the author's unconcious -- Jia said that that's the typical style of Jung's writing.
Chapter 3 "The process of individuation" is quite easy to follow. Its concept is similar to Chinese idea of "oneness of heaven/nature and man".
Chapter 4 "Symbolism in the visual arts" is a little boring to me.
Chapter 5 "Symbols in an individual analysis" describes a series of (visioning) dreams of a particular patient, which is most interesting. But many of its analyses are very stretching, which is typical in this book (and in Jung's other books, as I was told).
This book is more broader then "Analytical Psychology: Its Theory and Practice". Although both are excellent readings, I consider the latter better because it is full of great sights from Jung.
I recommend the hardcover edition which has beautiful color pictures.
Hardcover. Published by Anchor Press. ISBN 0385052219.

Analytical Psychology: Its Theory and Practice, by C.G Jung
It contains five lectures that Jung gave in 1935 at the Tavistock Clinic in London. I consider this book the best introduction to Jungian Psychology among the books I read (better than "Man and His Symbols" ).
Hardcover. Pantheon Books, 1968.
(I bought a paperback edition with ISBN 0394708628. Identical content but smaller font. From Amazon book preview, the ISBN 0415738695 also has the same content. 7/21/2014: Just found out that the full text is included in the book "The Symbolic Life" which is vol 18 of the collected works of C.G. Jung.)
5/30/2014: Read it the second time.

Country Driving, by Peter Hessler
An interesting reading. The view of China from a foreign journalist.
I do not like those changes occurred to Chinese people in recent 15 years, and the way they handle business and deal with each other. It is a crazy world. On the other hand, maybe it has been this way -- I did not realize it when I was young.

Foundaries of the Soul, by June Singer
As its subtitle "the practice of JUNG's psychology" suggested, this book is mainly about the application of Jung's psychology in Singer's psychotherapy practice. I think Singer's has many practical insight; however, my overall feeling is that the idea delivered in this book is not very sharp. Probably the author's understanding of Jung's psychology is not really clear either. But still a good reading.

She, by H. Rider Haggard
Read this book because C.G. Jung used it an example to discuss anima. It is an erotic fantasy and adventure book, and would be very entertaining if I read it 20 years ago. The character "She" is quite unique, very different from what the Hollywood's model of powerful queen of savage tribe. From the wisdom of She's words, and I can have some clue why Jung liked it (After reading Jung's discussion, I have to say this clue is wrong).

Introduction to Jungian Psychology, by C.G. Jung
Subtitle: Notes of the Seminar on Analytical Psychology Given in 1925. Mainly contains two parts: 1. Jung's own early spiritualistic experiences, which should have a big overlapping with his autobiography. 2. Introduction to his work about Psychology types. The appendix has the anima and animus discussion based on 3 novels, which I skipped (3/8/2014: read them today). So it is not appropriate to call this book "Introduction to Jungian Psychology", even though it did tough some main concepts of Jungian psychology.
As expected, I do not fully understand it, but think it quite interesting.
Edited by Sonu Shamdasani and William McGuire. Princeton University Press, 2011. ISBN 9780691152059.

Quite dense. It seems that Freud treated psyche as a concrete thing and tries to give/imagine every detail about how it works. He also stretched his theory to explain almost every thing. It is not convincing.

Further Along the Road Less Traveled, by M. Scott Peck
This book is not good as the "Road Less Traveled" which is eye opening (but the essential theory presented in the latter book is indeed from C.G. Jung). On the other hand, it still has many good insights. However, many times I agreed with Peck's observations, but only half-agreed or disagreed with his conclusions or proposed solutions. I felt that Dr. Peck chose an easy road which won't lead to the original destination by converting to a formal Christian religion, and from this book I felt that his thinking seemed to be narrowed.
